Well, yeah, I do feel like spring is a great time to enjoy some battles!
A Cipher battle under the cherry blossoms... how refined!
And in my humble opinion, a change of scenery warrants a change in opponents as well.
Right... however, we should broach the main topic...

Today is Cipher series 16's release daaay!!!!!!

Waaah! Mister Roy and Miss Celica... Miss Sanaki and Miss Eir too! Everyone looks so beautiful and cool!
The theme of Series 16 is the stories of those people with the courage to stand up against the mighty for the sake of the world!
Stand up... against the mighty...?
I guess to put it in simple terms, a god or something like that emerges, the heroes gather some legendary weapons, and there is a crazy battle!
Can't really get a sense for what you're talkin' about... but it sounds pretty amazing...
I'll start by introducing Binding Blade, which appears under the Legendary Weapon symbol! They feature the new LIS--Legendary Item Skills!
LIS are special skills that those wielding Elibe's Legendary Weapons or the Binding Blade have! Of note, Roy has a skill that allows him to deploy an ally whenever one of his comrades uses an LIS!
Hm? These cards with LIS skills... don't their illustrations look kinda similar?
Good eyes, Alice. Actually... when you combine the 8 cards with the Lendary Weapons and the card with the Binding Blade... they make one image together!
All 9... connect...!?
That's right... the biggest connecting image in Cipher history! This is what it will look like if you arrange them all!
W...woooooow~! That's awesome!!
But... it appears some areas are marked out with a "?"...?
Weeeel... actually... only these 5 appear in series 16. The rest will be appearing in a later series.

C'mon, don't tease us like that... well, guess this'll give us some time to build anticipation.
Incidentally, when series 17 releases in June, it seems like we'll see some more LIS cards, so keep your eyes peeled!

Next up, we have the "Blade of Light" cards! Echoes: Shadows of Valentia has two protagonists, Alm and Celica. This series focuses on portaying Celica's half of the story.
Fie! Are Sir Boey and Lady Mae in Overclasses?! I must get my hands on these!
Genny looks so cute as a Falcon Knight, too!
And near the end of her tale... something befalls Celica!
Eeep! M-Miss Celica... she's become a witch!?
Send one of the cards stacked on the opponent's Lord to the retreat area... this is unprecedented...
So she doesn't just look scary, she's got the skills to back it up...!

Next, we have the Radiant Dawn cards under the Medallion symbol, which focus on Empress Sanaki and the Begnion Empire!
So this is Lady Sanaki after becoming empress. How dignified.
She's holding Ragnell and Alondite! Both divine swords side-by-side in one illustration! It really ignites something in you!
It allows you to perform everything from your opening phase to deployment a second time!? What an incredible effect! Think of the battles you could have!
Plenty of other characters, like those associated with Sanaki and the Laguz, appear as well!
Wooow! It's Miss Sigrun and Miss Tanith! They're pegasus knights like me--I want to try battling with them!
Looks to be a lot of good cards among the Laguz too. This'll be one hell of a fight!
And from Heroes, Eir, Líf, and Thrasir from Book 3 have already been added to the Heroes lineup!
Already!? They were only just added to Heroes! Cipher is something else...
Such efficient work. I will have to take inspiration.
And, and! From last spring's "Hares at the Fair" event, we have Alfonse and Sharena as well!
How cute! I will need to get my hands on these as well!

Well, whether or not the girl's got it right doesn't matter. What does matter is that these are some seriously strong foes.

Regardless of witch Shade... characters who make formidable allies and terrifying opponents are aplenty.
Cipher series 16... more research is necessary...
Come to think of it, everyone... did you all get a chance to watch the 2019 Winter Special Broadcast?
Jun Fukuyama, voice of Lord Roy, made an appearance as a guest!
Of course I watched. It was wonderful as always.
During the broadcast, they introduced some development documents from Binding Blade. I've borrowed some of them for our column today.

Lilina, Dieck, Sophia, Melady... These are the characters who had legendary weapons in this series.
...there are notes here and there... is this a primary source...?
And these are Saul, Dorothy, Lalum, Cath, Ogier, and Gonzalez... all of whom appeared in series 16 as well!
They really do have that in-progress feel...
